The Church of the Beatitudes

2 min read

On a hill overlooking the Sea of Galilee stands the Church of the Beatitudes, commemorating the "Sermon on the Mount"—a foundational text in the New Testament that brings together the principles of Christian morality and compassion, centered around the eight "Beatitudes." The term "beatitude" implies a state of supreme blessedness or divine grace ("Blessed are those who..."), rather than mere earthly happiness. The sermon is considered one of the most influential texts in the history of Western morality, and many recognize in it echoes of the social reality of the Jews of the Galilee in the first century CE; poverty, religious tension with the Roman authorities, and messianic expectation.

The impressive structure of the church was inaugurated in 1938 and designed by the Italian architect Antonio Barluzzi, known as the "Architect of the Holy Land." Barluzzi designed and built dozens of holy sites across the country for the Franciscan Order, including the Church of Gethsemane and the Basilica of the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor. The church is built in an octagonal shape, with each of its eight sides representing one of the Beatitudes. Beyond its religious significance, the church is a prominent architectural landmark in the Israeli landscape and a magnet for visitors and researchers who come to experience the unique intersection of ancient history, modern architecture, and nature.

The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12):

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."

"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth."

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied."

"Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy."

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God."

"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
